God’s Favorite Three-Word Prayer

Lately I’ve been studying what it truly means to be a Godly wife. When we made the decision for me to not work and become a homemaker instead, I thought that being a Godly wife meant fulfilling the traditional gender role. He continued to bring home a paycheck while I cooked, cleaned, grocery shopped, took care of bills, and ran errands as they became necessary. It didn’t take very long for me to start feeling burned out and slacking on my responsibilities. Soon our home turned into a disaster area and I was embarrassed to let people see for fear of judgement. That, coupled with looks of shock and comments of, “What do you DO all day?!” when strangers found out I stayed home lead me to feel like what I was doing was never going to be enough.

That’s when God stepped in.

After months of dealing with feelings of regret and inadequacy, I left it with God. I started reaffirming myself that I AM enough, and I AM the perfect wife for no one else other than MY husband. It took time, but I started to realize that I was exactly where I needed to be. At home.

With my new-found confidence and sense of fulfillment, it dawned on me that I can’t be a Godly wife without also serving my husband spiritually, in addition to serving him physically. Now, when I say I serve him physically I don’t mean that I transform into a 1950’s housewife and greet him at the door every day with a martini and his slippers. I serve him by doing my job- taking care of the house. By doing my job it makes it easier for him to deal with the stresses that go along with doing his job. We are still working as a team, with equal responsibility. But how do I serve my husband spiritually? I knew I could pray for him, but what do I pray about? I had been praying for his faith to be reawakened and his heart to be stirred, but it felt like they were going unheard. I spent hours pouring myself over my bible and devotionals because I thought they would change him. Then a friend recommended I start reading a book called “The Power of a Praying Wife” by Stormie Omartian.

I highly recommend this book. In addition to the devotional, there is also a book of prayers and a prayer & study guide available for purchase. I immediately connected with this devotional. The first, and most detailed, chapter is about you, the wife. You are your husband’s greatest asset in his spiritual journey. In order for God to mold him and change him, he must first mold you and change you. You must be willing to lay down your life in prayer for the benefit of you, your husband, and your marriage. You must be willing to pray God’s favorite three-word prayer:change

Only then will you start to see a difference and see your prayers working.

For those of you men reading, there is also a version titled “The Power of a Praying Husband” that you can pick up and check out. If you’ve ever done this study or something similar, let me know in the comments! I love hearing encouragement from other spouses. ❤
